Two Roach Species, Two Completely Different Ways Into a Building Here

Cockroaches are not a verdict on how clean a house is, and in San Juan Bautista the building explains far more than the housekeeping does. German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) do not walk in from outside. They arrive inside something, a grocery box, a used appliance, a delivery, a piece of furniture, and then settle into warm, tight harborage near food and water. Once they are in they breed quickly and develop resistance to over-the-counter pyrethroid sprays within a generation, which is why store-bought products so often spread a population instead of shrinking it.

American cockroaches take the opposite route. They live in sewers, drain lines, crawl spaces and damp voids, and they come up into a building through floor drains, unsealed pipe penetrations, dry P-traps and cracked laterals. That is a live pathway in San Juan Bautista, where much of the building stock around the plaza predates the sewer system it is now connected to. Anywhere old plumbing meets an old floor, there is a way up.

The older buildings give both species more to work with. Wood floors over crawl spaces, unsealed penetrations at every pipe, gaps at the base of lath and plaster, and warm voids behind water heaters and appliances are all harborage. The later houses on the streets around the core have fewer of those and correspondingly fewer cockroach calls, which is a construction difference rather than a difference in the people living in them.
