Crickets: Seasonal Invasion and Fabric Damage

Scientific name: Gryllus species (field cricket), Acheta domesticus (house cricket)

Field crickets are primarily outdoor insects — they live in vegetation, ground cover, and debris. In late summer and fall, as temperatures drop and conditions outside become less hospitable, crickets are attracted to the warmth, light, and shelter of structures. Once inside, they can be surprisingly destructive to natural-fiber clothing, carpets, and upholstery. The noise from a cricket inside a wall can be far more disruptive than it sounds outdoors.

How to Identify Crickets

Size

16–25mm for field cricket. House cricket slightly smaller.

Color

Field cricket: dark brown to black. House cricket: tan with darker markings.

Body Shape

Cylindrical body with long hind legs for jumping. Long antennae. Two prominent cerci at the rear. Wings present but rarely used for flight.

Distinctive Features

Chirping sound (only males chirp) — produced by rubbing wings together. Nocturnal. Long antennae.

Behavior & Lifecycle

Crickets are attracted to light at night — a lit window or door with gaps is a primary entry point. They can enter through any gap in the foundation, around doors, or through vents. Inside, they prefer dark, humid areas: basements, crawl spaces, behind appliances. They will chew irregular holes in natural-fiber fabrics (wool, cotton, silk) when feeding.

Crickets in Central California

Late summer and fall (August–November) is peak cricket entry season across all four counties as field cricket populations peak and temperatures begin to moderate. Warm, dry fall weather drives crickets toward moist, warm structures. Properties adjacent to vacant lots, fields, or natural grass areas have higher cricket pressure.

Why This Matters Here

Crickets are not a health risk but can damage wool clothing, wool carpets, silk curtains, and cotton fabric through feeding. The noise from a male cricket inside a structure — particularly inside a wall void — is a significant nuisance that can seriously disrupt sleep.

Our General Pest Control service

How to Reduce Your Risk

The most cost-effective pest control is prevention. These steps reduce the likelihood of crickets problems — particularly important for properties in our service area where the conditions favor this species.

  • 01

Install door sweeps on all exterior doors — crickets easily enter under doors without sweeps

  • 02

Seal gaps around pipes, utility penetrations, and foundation edges

  • 03

Reduce exterior lighting or switch to yellow "bug lights" — white light strongly attracts crickets

  • 04

Keep mulch, leaves, and vegetation away from the structure — these are cricket harborage adjacent to the building

When to Call a Professional

When crickets are entering regularly despite basic exclusion, causing fabric damage, or when the noise is significant enough to disrupt sleep. A perimeter treatment combined with exclusion effectively manages seasonal cricket invasions.

Crickets FAQs

Why do I suddenly get crickets in the fall?

Field cricket populations peak in late summer, and as fall temperatures drop and vegetation dries, large numbers of crickets migrate toward structures for warmth and shelter. The seasonal nature of cricket invasions is predictable — a perimeter treatment in late August or early September, before peak migration, is the most effective preventive approach.
