Saratoga grew out of orchards, and the trees stayed. The city still keeps its Heritage Orchard off Fruitvale Avenue, and the private lots around it hold citrus, fig, persimmon, walnut and plum that residents planted or inherited. Roof rats are arboreal. They feed at night in the canopy, they nest above ground, and a mature branch touching tile roofing is a ramp. Per household, Saratoga has more fruit and nut trees than anywhere else we work in Santa Clara County, and the rat pressure tracks that exactly.

The season is legible. Fruit ripens and drops through late summer and fall, the population climbs on the surplus, then the first cold storms push those animals toward warm framing — attics, garage ceilings, insulated wall voids. Calls from the Argonaut and Blue Hills blocks concentrate in that window. Fallen fruit left on the ground under a tree is the single largest food subsidy on the property, and it keeps working all winter.

Then there is the water. Saratoga Creek and Wildcat Creek run down out of the Santa Cruz Mountains and through the city, and their banks give rats cover plus a travel route that connects one neighborhood to the next. Homes backing those corridors, or backing the open space above Congress Springs, get re-pressured continually. That is why trapping alone never holds there.
