Roof Rats Ride the Soquel Creek Corridor Down to the Beach and Come in Over the Top

Soquel Creek gives Capitola a continuous strip of dense, watered vegetation running from the inland Soquel neighborhoods straight through the Village to the sand. That is year-round rat habitat with food, cover, and water in one line, and it does not freeze out or dry up. Roof rats are climbers by nature; they use the creek willows, the mature ornamentals in Village gardens, and utility lines as a road network, which is why a Capitola rat problem so often starts at the roof and not at the back door.

New Brighton State Beach adds a second source. The bluff-top eucalyptus and pine forest bordering the city on that side holds its own rodent population, and the wooded gulches behind it carry activity inland. Homes backing onto either edge tend to get a fall wave once the rains start and the ground cover gets soaked.

Then the buildings cooperate. Old Village cottages have exposed rafter tails, open eave gaps, and no soffit to speak of, and a roof rat squeezes through anything larger than about a half-inch. On the 1970s–1990s houses uphill it is usually a lifted roof-to-wall junction, an unscreened attic vent, or the gap where a remodel brought a new line through the wall. Trapping without closing those openings just makes room for the next one.
