Open Eaves, Dry Foothills and an August Yellowjacket Peak

Yellowjacket colonies build all summer and peak from August through October, when workers switch from feeding larvae to hunting protein and sugar for themselves. That is when they start appearing at a Cupertino backyard table. Most of these nests are underground — an abandoned rodent burrow, a gap under a retaining wall, a void beside a walkway — and the western edge of the city gives them plenty of ground to work with. Monta Vista, Seven Springs and the Montebello slopes back onto oak woodland and chaparral, and nest density is noticeably higher against that interface.

Paper wasps take the structure instead. The wide, open eaves and exposed beam ends on Cupertino's 1950s–1970s houses are effectively a covered shelf out of the rain, and so are attic vents, pergolas and the underside of a patio cover. We find combs year after year on the same west and south elevations, because the sun exposure is what they are choosing.

Honey bees are a different call. Swarms move in spring, and Cupertino has real forage — the remnant orchard plantings at McClellan Ranch Preserve, the vegetation along the Stevens Creek corridor, and the hillside vineyards up toward Montebello Ridge. A swarm hanging in a shrub can often be collected and rehomed. A colony that has already built comb inside a wall is a removal job, because the comb and honey have to come out or they attract everything else.
