Roof Rats Reach Livermore Attics by Branch, Fence Rail and Arroyo Bank

Rodents get into Livermore houses from above more often than from below. Roof rats climb, and the 1950s–70s ranch houses here have low rooflines that put the eave within reach of a fence top or an overgrown fruit tree. Once a branch rests on fascia, it is a ramp. Attic vent screens on houses that age have usually rusted through or been pried loose at some point, and that is the gap we end up finding.

The arroyos are the ground-level route. Arroyo Mocho, Arroyo Las Positas and Arroyo Valle run through town with continuous cover and water, and rodents work those banks year-round before moving into the yards backing them near Sycamore Grove Park and Robertson Park. On the south side the vineyards add another edge — the South Livermore Valley AVA keeps thousands of acres of vineyard right against the residential boundary, with irrigation, fruit and trellis cover.

Then the hills dry out. By late summer the grassland on the Altamont side is bare, and the mice and rats living in it move toward irrigated landscaping. Springtown and the properties out along Vasco Road feel that shift first. Inside, rats nest in blown-in attic insulation and travel the joist bays, which is why an attic that sounds busy at night usually needs insulation work once the exclusion is done.
