Storm Drains and Crawl Spaces Are Where Pacifica's Cockroaches Actually Live

Blatta orientalis is a Pacifica specialty because this city is exactly what it wants: cool, wet, and never dry for long. They live outdoors and below grade — in storm drains across the Sharp Park flats and Linda Mar, in water meter and irrigation boxes, in bare-soil crawl spaces, under ice plant and in leaf litter against a foundation. From there they come up through pipe penetrations, floor and garage drains, and the gap under a door. Slow, dark and roughly an inch long, they read as a moisture signal, not a housekeeping one.

Their movement follows water rather than temperature. The first heavy storms of the wet season flood drain systems and push them out and upward, which is why the late-fall calls cluster after a big rain, and the late-summer dry-down does the same thing in reverse by driving them toward interior moisture. Because Pacifica winters bottom out in the mid-40s instead of freezing, nothing in that cycle ever gets interrupted. The population outside the building is permanent.

German cockroaches are a different problem in the same city. They live indoors only, cluster tight to warmth, food and water behind a refrigerator or inside a dishwasher motor housing, and travel with the building rather than with the weather. In the mid-century apartment blocks around the Manor, Palmetto Avenue and Sharp Park they use shared wall voids and stacked plumbing chases to reach the next unit. They arrive on a grocery bag, a used appliance or a cardboard box, and their presence says nothing about how anyone keeps a kitchen.
