Carpenter Ants and Argentine Ants Share an Aptos Kitchen but Live in Two Completely Different Places

Getting the species right is most of the job here. Argentine ants are small, uniform brown, and move in continuous trails; they nest shallow — under pavers, in irrigation boxes, in the mulch pressed against a foundation. Carpenter ants are large and black, travel alone or in loose lines, and are most active after dark. They do not eat wood, they excavate it, and they choose wood that already has a moisture problem.

Aptos supplies that moisture in specific places. Argentine ants run on a different clock. Nearly all of the 25 to 30 inches of rain Aptos gets lands between November and March, so there are two predictable indoor pushes: late summer, when the shallow soil dries and the colony follows plumbing and irrigation toward water, and the first heavy storms, when nests flood and the population moves up. Spraying a visible trail during either one removes foragers only; the queens are outside and unaffected.
