Aromas is ringed by rodent habitat on every side. The Pajaro River corridor and the wetlands north and west hold permanent Norway rat populations in the riparian margins. The strawberry, raspberry, and row-crop ground of the Pajaro Valley presses against the community from another direction, and the oak woodland and chaparral running up toward Chittenden Pass sits on a third. When a field is disked, a crop finishes, or the first hard December rain floods a burrow, those animals move. The nearest dry, warm, food-bearing structure is somebody's barn.

Then there is what a rural parcel keeps on hand. Grain and pellet feed, a hay stack, a chicken run, fruit trees, a woodpile, and a shop with a roll-up door that does not seal at the corners. Older houses along Rea Avenue and Blohm Avenue have foundation vents with rusted screen. The ranch-era homes have crawl-space vents, dryer ducts, and pipe penetrations nobody ever sealed. A rat needs a gap about the size of a quarter. A house mouse (Mus musculus) needs less than that.

Trapping on its own does not hold here, and the reason is simple. Take ten animals off a property backed by permanent riparian habitat and ten more use the same runway in from the same place. Exclusion is what breaks the cycle.
