Argentine ants are the ones on the counter. They nest shallow in damp soil and duff, and redwood litter around a Ben Lomond foundation holds moisture all year, so the colony never goes dormant and never has to travel far. They come in on the same routes every time — the crawl-space vent, the gap behind a batten, the pipe penetration under the kitchen sink.
