My Carmel cottage has original redwood trim — will termite treatment damage it?

No. Neither Vikane fumigation nor a local borate or orange oil treatment alters wood, plaster, stone or finishes — the fumigant is a gas that penetrates and then aerates out, and borates soak into bare wood without changing its color or dimension. Where we drill, it is small-diameter holes in framing we can plug, and on finished surfaces we plan the access with you first. Do the Monterey pines around my house in Carmel Woods make termites worse?

Not directly — drywood termites fly to a structure, they do not walk in from a tree. What the canopy does is keep roofs and eaves shaded and damp, which slows drying after the November–April rains and helps decay fungi soften wood that termites then exploit. Trimming branches back off the roofline and keeping gutters clear does more for termite risk in Carmel Woods than removing a tree would.
