The Canopy Over a Monte Sereno Lot Is a Road, and It Ends at Your Roofline

Roof rats never have to touch the ground to reach a Monte Sereno attic. The city built out on half-acre to two-acre custom lots, and decades of ornamental and fruit planting has produced a near-continuous canopy of oaks, redwoods, olives, citrus, plum and walnut that in many places overhangs the roof. Twin Creeks is the clearest example: curving lanes with no sidewalks, no curbs and no street lighting, running under heavy tree cover. Rattus rattus is an arboreal climber. It moves tree to limb to gutter to a gap at the fascia or an unscreened attic vent, and it crosses no open lawn where a trap or an owl would find it.

The creek lines supply the other species. San Tomas Aquino Creek along the western border holds moisture, dense riparian cover and food all year, sustaining Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) on the ground while roof rats work overhead. When winter rain charges those channels in December and January, the ground population moves toward the nearest dry void: a crawl space, a shop wall, an insulated garage ceiling. Parcels on the ground sloping toward the creeks see it first.

The structures then make it easy. A Monte Sereno parcel usually carries three or four buildings, and detached garages, pool houses and shops are built with more gaps than the residence: roll-up door thresholds, uncollared conduit, open soffit returns, and vents screened decades ago with hardware cloth that has since rusted through. Fruit left on the ground under the trees keeps the population fed while it finds them.
