German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) arrive in things people carry in — a cardboard case off a delivery truck, a used refrigerator, a bag back from a trip. That is worth saying plainly, because the assumption that roaches mean a dirty home keeps people from calling. What decides whether they establish is warmth, moisture and harborage, and Monterey's older buildings supply all three no matter how clean the kitchen is.

The building stock is the local factor. Subdivided Victorians and 1920s duplexes in New Monterey and Old Monterey, and the cannery-era commercial structures along Cannery Row, have hollow floors, plumbing chases and shared walls connecting one kitchen to the next. Roaches use those voids as travel routes, so treating one apartment or storefront while the adjoining space goes untreated produces reinfestation in weeks. Coastal humidity keeps the voids damp enough that they rarely need to come out into the open for water.

American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are a different call in this city — larger, and usually coming up out of drains, sewer laterals and crawl spaces rather than living in the kitchen. We see them in older downtown buildings and around the low ground near El Estero and Laguna Grande, where the drain system and high water table put them at the line. Species determines treatment, so identification is not a formality here.
