Dark, Dry and Undisturbed — Monterey Builds That Under Every Hillside Deck

Western black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) want a protected pocket that stays dry and never gets bumped. Monterey's terrain supplies it constantly. Houses in Monterey Vista, Deer Flats and Casanova Oak Knoll sit on slopes, so the downhill side carries a deck on posts, stair stringers, storage under the floor, and a crawl-space vent — the whole catalog of widow harborage in one place. We find them in the same three spots on nearly every hillside property: the underside of the deck ledger, the corner where a crawl-space door meets its frame, and the woodpile.

The rest of the spider load is a humidity story. The marine layer keeps insect activity going year-round on the Peninsula, and spiders follow their prey — which is why the exterior of a Monterey house on a fog-line street rebuilds webs across the porch, eaves and window frames faster than a house in a dry inland town. Orb weavers and cellar spiders do most of that work. They are harmless, and they are also a reading on how much insect pressure surrounds the structure.

The other one to know is the brown widow (Latrodectus geometricus), an invasive species that has established along coastal California and turns up here in patio furniture, planter rims, and the underside of mailbox posts. Its egg sac is spiky rather than smooth, and that texture is usually the first thing anyone notices.
