The Cypress and Pine Canopy Is a Roof Rat Highway Into Pacific Grove Attics

Roof rats do not walk in from a field here. They arrive overhead. Pacific Grove kept its mature Monterey cypress, Monterey pine, and eucalyptus, and that canopy runs almost unbroken from the Del Monte Forest boundary at Huckleberry Hill down through the neighborhoods toward Lovers Point. A rat travels branch to branch, drops onto a roof, and looks for the first opening at the eave or the vent.

Older Pacific Grove houses offer plenty of them. Victorian and Carpenter Gothic construction has open rafter tails, decorative bargeboard with gaps behind it, foundation vents whose screens have corroded in the salt air, and attic spaces never sealed against anything smaller than a cat. Once inside, roof rats nest in blown-in insulation, chew wiring, and reuse the same runway nightly. The sound people describe — scratching that travels along a ceiling right around dusk — is that runway, not a random visit.

Trapping by itself loses here because the canopy keeps resupplying. Knock the population down without closing the building and a new group is in the same attic within weeks, following the same scent trail to the same hole. The tree is not the problem and does not need to come down. The gap does.
