German Cockroaches Travel This City by Pipe, Not by Doorway

German cockroaches want three things: warmth, moisture and food. A kitchen or bathroom supplies all three regardless of how it is kept. Field populations are also widely resistant to the pyrethroids sold over the counter, which is why those products so often make an infestation look worse: the spray repels, the population splits, and the survivors set up in two new places. None of this is a verdict on the household. It is an insect that breeds fast and hides in gaps a few millimetres wide.

Santa Clara's newer housing hands them a route. The wood-over-concrete podium condos and mid-rise apartments around Santa Clara Station and the Freedom Circle district stack kitchens and bathrooms vertically on shared plumbing chases, so one unit's population supplies the whole column. The Old Quad rentals near the university do the same thing horizontally, through shared walls, old pipe penetrations and a tenancy that turns over every year or two.

There is no off-season for either species here. Indoors the temperature never changes, and outdoors Santa Clara winter lows of 40–44°F are far from cold enough to reset anything. American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) work the other half of the city — drains, crawl spaces and the storm sewer network that carries this flat basin's runoff toward the creeks — and turn up in ground-floor units and older Old Quad crawl spaces after a wet stretch.
