A 1960s Saratoga Attic Takes Ninety-Degree Afternoons and Cold Winter Nights

Saratoga's climate swings harder than its reputation suggests. Summer afternoons in this sheltered pocket at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains push into the 90s, and winter nights turn cold. Both directions load the ceiling. A 1960s attic insulated to the standard of its day, then compressed by decades of storage, foot traffic and rodent runways, gives up on both ends — hot upstairs rooms in September, a cold ceiling in January.

The ranch roof shape makes it worse at the edges.
