Wasp & Bee Removal in Aptos, CA

101 Exterminators handles wasp and bee removal in Aptos, from ground-nesting yellowjackets on canyon banks to paper wasp combs under deep coastal eaves. Late summer is the peak — August through October, when colonies reach full size and foragers turn to scavenging around patios in Rio Del Mar and Aptos Village. Honey bee swarms we try to move to a local beekeeper instead of treating. CA licensed and insured since 2005.

A Hillside Deck Above Trout Gulch Is a Roof Over a Yellowjacket Nest

Western yellowjackets (Vespula pensylvanica) nest underground, and they want a bank with cover and drainage. The cut slopes on Aptos Hills and Day Valley lots, the canyon sides above Trout Gulch and Mangels Gulch, and the abandoned rodent burrows already in that ground give them exactly that. When a house is built into a slope, the deck and stair framing above the bank becomes a roof — dry, undisturbed, and directly over the entrance.

The calendar concentrates the problem. A colony that began as one overwintered queen in spring hits full size in August, and by then it has switched from hunting insects to scavenging protein and sugar. That is when yellowjackets appear at a Seacliff barbecue or a Seascape patio table and people go looking for the nest. It has usually been there since April.

Above ground, Aptos offers paper wasps (Polistes species) different real estate. The deep eaves and covered entries on the 1920s beach cottages, the pergolas and covered decks that came with 1980s and 1990s Seascape construction, and open gable vents all take an open comb. Honey bees are a separate call — swarms move through in spring and settle in hedges, chimneys and wall cavities before choosing a permanent home.

How We Work in Aptos

On an Aptos slope lot we look under the deck and along the cut bank first, then the eave line and the gable vents. Ground nests are treated in the evening once foragers have returned, in full protective gear, and we mark the entrance so nobody steps on it before we come back. Accessible combs are physically removed. If it is honey bees inside a wall, we talk through comb removal, because wax and honey left in a cavity draws ants and rodents next.

Aptos Climate

Aptos has a classic Santa Cruz County coastal climate — moderate year-round temperatures (55–72°F) with persistent marine influence. The Forest of Nisene Marks creates a local moisture effect on the hillside neighborhoods, with higher humidity and greater precipitation than the beachfront areas. Annual rainfall is 25–30 inches. The combination of coastal fog, mountain precipitation, and year-round mild temperatures creates continuous pest activity with no significant winter suppression.

Housing Stock

Aptos has a mix of older residential development in Aptos Village (1950s–1970s) and newer development in Rio del Mar and Seascape from the 1980s–2000s. Properties on the hillside adjacent to Nisene Marks face elevated roof rat and moisture pest pressure. Rio del Mar beach-area homes face the same coastal humidity and subterranean termite conditions as Capitola Village.

Why Local Expertise Matters

Aptos' position at the forest-coast interface gives it pest dynamics from both ecosystems simultaneously — we address the Nisene Marks roof rat pressure and the coastal subterranean termite conditions as a combined reality for hillside properties, rather than treating them as separate problems.

Signs You Need Wasps & Bees Service in Aptos

We treat yellow jacket nests (including in-ground and wall-void nests), paper wasp nests under eaves and overhangs, European and bald-faced hornet nests, and mud dauber tubes. For honey bee hives established in walls or structures, we provide complete treatment and nest removal including comb excavation to prevent future odor and secondary pest attraction. For accessible swarms, we can arrange transfer to a local beekeeper.

Visible nest under eaves, in shrubs, attached to window frames, in tree cavities, or in attic vents

Repeated wasp activity near a specific location on the structure — nest is likely nearby

Wasp or bee activity around a specific gap, crack, or vent opening — indicates cavity nest inside

In-ground yellow jacket activity — small hole in soil or mulch bed with wasps entering and exiting

Honey bee swarm visible on a tree, shrub, or structure — usually a temporary cluster

Buzzing sounds within walls, soffits, or chimney area — established honey bee hive

Our Wasps & Bees Process in Aptos

Every job follows the same methodical approach — no shortcuts, no guesswork. Here is what to expect when you work with us in Aptos.

01

Species & Nest Location

We identify the species and locate all nesting sites, including in-wall or structural voids that require special access. Species determines the treatment approach.

02

Treatment in Protective Equipment

Our technicians treat nests in full protective equipment — veil, suit, and gloves. Evening treatment is preferred for ground nests when foragers have returned to the nest.

03

Nest Removal

After treatment, accessible nests are physically removed. For wall-void nests, we advise on comb removal to prevent secondary pest attraction from wax, honey, and larval material.

04

Entry Point Sealing

We seal entry points used by cavity-nesting species to prevent re-colonization by a new colony in the same location.

Wasps & Bees You Can Count On in Aptos

Bee Relocation Option

When possible, we work with local beekeepers to relocate honey bee swarms and accessible hives rather than exterminating them. Good for bees, good for local agriculture.

Wall-Void Nest Removal

Nests inside walls require more than just treatment — the comb must be removed to prevent honey seepage, secondary pests, and odor. We handle the complete remediation.

Same-Day Service for Emergencies

A wasp nest near an entry door, child's play area, or pet run is a safety emergency. We prioritize same-day or next-day service for these situations.

Evening Ground Nest Treatment

Yellow jacket ground nests are treated at dusk when the full colony has returned, maximizing effectiveness and minimizing any risk of disrupted forager activity.

Wasp & Bee Removal FAQs for Aptos

Why are yellowjackets suddenly all over my Aptos patio in September?

Because the colony peaked and its diet changed. Western yellowjackets (Vespula pensylvanica) spend spring and early summer feeding larvae on insect protein; by late August the nest is at full size and workers switch to scavenging meat and sugar, which is why they arrive at outdoor tables in Rio Del Mar and Seascape all at once. The nest is usually within a short distance, in a bank or an old rodent burrow, and has been there since spring.

There is a wasp nest under my deck on an Aptos Hills slope. Can it wait until winter?

It can if nobody uses that part of the property, because a western yellowjacket colony dies off with sustained cold and the nest is not reused the following year. It should not wait if the entrance is near stairs, a path or a play area, or if anyone in the house has a venom allergy — a disturbed ground nest defends aggressively, and deck framing above it traps people in the flight path. On Aptos slope lots the entrance is often uphill of where you would expect it.

We have honey bees in the wall of a Rio Del Mar cottage. Do they have to be killed?

Not always — an accessible swarm that has only just settled can often be transferred to a local beekeeper, and that is what we try first. An established hive inside a wall cavity is a different job: the comb, honey and brood have to come out of the wall either way, because leaving them draws ants, rodents and moisture damage into that bay. In older cottages with lath and plaster we plan the opening and the patch before starting.
