Cool, Damp Crawl Spaces Give Ben Lomond a Different Cockroach Than the Valley Floor Has

German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) need warmth and human structure. They live in the kitchen, they arrive in cardboard and used appliances, and they dominate dense apartments and busy restaurant kitchens. That is not the usual Ben Lomond picture. What we find under mountain cabins is the pair that prefers cool and wet — Oriental cockroaches (Blatta orientalis) in the crawl space, under the deck, and in the sub-area, and American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) in drain lines and sumps.

The environment explains it. A crawl space over bare soil, taking roughly fifty inches of rain a year and sitting in shade most of the day, holds exactly the temperature and humidity Oriental cockroaches want. They move in from leaf litter, woodpiles, and drains, then come up into the house through the same openings everything else uses: the sub-area vent, the gap around a supply line, the crawl-space hatch. Where the drain plumbing is old, American cockroaches use the pipe itself.

That is why the treatments diverge. German cockroach work is gel bait and growth regulators placed inside the kitchen. Oriental and American cockroaches are an exterior and moisture problem, so the work happens at the crawl space, the drains, the sub-area, and the perimeter. Treating a Ben Lomond cabin like a city apartment kitchen misses the population entirely.
