Scotts Valley Has a Crawl-Space Roach and a Kitchen Roach, and They Are Not the Same Animal

Oriental cockroaches are a moisture species, and this city is built for them. They live outdoors in cool, damp, dark places — under decks in packed redwood duff, in water meter and irrigation boxes, in crawl spaces, and in drain and sump lines — and Scotts Valley supplies all of it through a wet season that runs November to March. They push indoors twice a year: when the rain floods their outdoor harborage, and again when the ground dries in summer and they follow moisture inside. Garages, laundry rooms, and ground-floor bathrooms are where people meet them.

German cockroaches never come in from the yard. They live indoors only, and they arrive in something carried through the door — grocery packaging, a cardboard shipment, a used appliance, a moving box. Once inside they concentrate near warmth and food in kitchen and bathroom voids, and they reproduce fast enough that a small population becomes an obvious one within a couple of months. They also develop resistance to over-the-counter pyrethroid sprays within about a generation, which is why the aerosol from the hardware store stops working so quickly.

Neither species says anything about how a home is kept. Oriental cockroaches respond to the rainfall and shade of a Santa Cruz Mountains lot; German cockroaches came in on a box. Both punish the same mistake — spraying the insects you can see. Repellent sprays push survivors deeper into wall voids and adjacent rooms, turning one kitchen problem into three. Bait carried back to harborage, plus an insect growth regulator that stops juveniles from reaching breeding age, works on the population instead of the survivors.
