Cockroaches in Aptos Are a Plumbing and Delivery Problem, Not a Housekeeping Verdict

The two species that matter here arrive by completely different routes, and telling them apart changes the entire treatment. American cockroaches are large and reddish-brown and live in wet places — sewer laterals, floor drains, damp crawl spaces, the sub-area of the older Seacliff and Rio Del Mar cottages. They wander indoors from those spaces, most often when the first winter storms saturate the ground. They are not usually breeding in the kitchen.

German cockroaches are small, tan, and do breed indoors. They arrive carried in: a grocery box off Soquel Drive, a delivered appliance, a piece of secondhand furniture out of a Seascape rental turnover, or a shared wall in an apartment or a mobile home. Once in, they settle into warm voids near food and water, behind the refrigerator, under the sink, inside a dishwasher housing. They also develop resistance to over-the-counter pyrethroid sprays quickly, which is why store-bought products tend to push them into new harborage instead of reducing them.

Aptos conditions favor the American species in particular. Older cottages over shallow crawl spaces, a marine layer that keeps the sub-area humid all year, and aging sewer laterals under the older streets all give Periplaneta somewhere permanent to live. Finding one in a bathroom on a November night says something about the plumbing and the crawl space. It says nothing about the house.
