The Roach in a Saratoga Bathroom Usually Came Up the Drain, Not In the Door

Species identification changes everything, so it comes first. The large reddish-brown insect that turns up in a Saratoga bathroom or garage at night is almost always an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), which lives in sewer lines, drains, water meter boxes and damp landscape and gets indoors through a dried-out floor drain or a failed trap. German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are half the size with two dark stripes behind the head, they live in kitchens and stay there, and they arrive in cardboard, groceries or a used appliance. Neither is a verdict on the house.

Saratoga's conditions strongly favor the outdoor species. Large irrigated lots with deep mulch beds, dense ground cover, valve boxes and forty years of layered planting hold moisture through a rainless summer, and that is habitat. Sewer laterals under the pre-1980 houses around the Village and the earlier flatland tracts develop cracks and root intrusion over the decades, giving the population a route from the line to the yard to the floor drain of a rarely used bathroom.

German cockroaches show up here in a narrower set of places: the Village restaurants and their shared walls, multi-unit buildings, and homes where something recently came in from a commercial kitchen or a moving load. In a detached Saratoga house they are uncommon, and when they do appear they are usually traceable to one introduction rather than a neighborhood population.
