German Cockroaches Move Between Attached Campbell Tenancies, Not Across Town

Blattella germanica cannot survive outdoors here. It lives entirely inside heated structures, breeds continuously, and reaches reproductive maturity in a couple of months, which is why a small introduction becomes an infestation so quickly. It also arrives — in cardboard, in an appliance cavity, in a grocery or equipment delivery, in a moving box — rather than wandering in from the yard. That is worth saying plainly: finding them tells you nothing about how clean a home or kitchen is.

Campbell's downtown building stock keeps them in circulation. The Campbell Avenue storefronts and the mixed-use floors above them are attached, with shared plumbing walls, common utility chases and shared rear alleys, so a population established in one kitchen has a physical path into the next tenancy and into the apartments overhead. The same holds in the multi-unit buildings off East Hamilton Avenue and South Bascom Avenue.

Single-family Campbell houses see a different roach entirely. Turkestan and American cockroaches live outdoors in irrigation boxes, water meter vaults, sewer lines and mulch across the 1950s–70s tract neighborhoods, and they come in through drains, weep screeds and the gap under a garage door — usually one or two at a time, in hot weather or right after a storm. That is a completely different job from a German cockroach population inside a wall.
