Wet Valley-Floor Soil Keeps Subterranean Colonies Foraging Under Watsonville All Winter

Watsonville's termite problem starts in the ground, not the attic. The Pajaro Valley floor takes 20 to 25 inches of rain between November and March, and the fields that surround the city run irrigation from February through November. Between the two, the soil under a Watsonville foundation almost never dries out. Western subterranean termites (Reticulitermes hesperus) need that moisture, and they keep foraging through the winter here instead of shutting down the way they do inland.
