A roach in a Salinas kitchen calls for a closer look, not a guess about where it came from. A small roach breeding behind an appliance needs a different plan from an outdoor species entering at a door. The same is true of a house, an apartment, and a food business: each has different access and record needs. Start with a clear photo or saved insect, note exactly where it appeared, and ask how the proposed work will be checked later. Salinas is our home base, but an address alone cannot identify the species or the source.
First, find out which cockroach it is
UC IPM separates roaches that live and breed indoors, such as German cockroaches, from several larger species that often live outdoors and enter buildings. German roaches often use tight spaces near food and water. An outdoor visitor may point instead to a door gap, damp utility area, or activity around the building. Size alone is not enough to name the species. Save a close photo or a specimen if you can do so safely. Tell the inspector whether you have seen small young roaches, egg cases, or several insects in the same room. Those clues help decide where to look next.

Make a short map before anything moves
Write down the date and room of each sighting. In a kitchen, check where food, water, warmth, and cover meet: under sinks, behind appliances, along cabinet edges, and near plumbing. UC IPM recommends sticky traps to find active areas and compare counts over time. Number each trap and keep its place and check interval steady. A trap moved from a busy cabinet to a quiet one can make a falling count look like success. If children or pets use the area, put monitors where they cannot reach them and follow the product directions. Ask a pest professional to identify an uncertain catch.

Deal with food and water while the source is checked
Close food containers, empty trash into a lidded bin, clean spills, and report leaks. Look behind equipment only where it is safe to reach; do not pull out a heavy stove or work near wiring on your own. These steps remove resources that can keep roaches active, but they do not tell you which species is present or reach bugs inside hidden gaps. Ask who will repair a leak, door sweep, or wall opening found during the inspection. Keep a photo of the condition and the date it was fixed. That repair log helps explain a change in trap catches.

A food business has a second set of duties
For a Salinas restaurant or food shop, protect food and food-contact areas as soon as activity is found. Note the room, equipment, stock, and time of the finding. The County of Monterey oversees retail food protection; a pest service record does not replace the facility's own food-safety duties or a county finding. Ask the person in charge to keep the county report, cleaning and repair notes, and pest reports together. Do not assume a delivery or neighboring tenant brought in the roach without evidence. Trace the route through inspection and repeat monitoring. A written plan should say which areas staff can open and when equipment can be safely moved.

Ask for a plan that fits the finding
The written scope should name the suspected species, active rooms, places that could not be checked, cleaning and repair tasks, treatment areas, and the next check. UC IPM favors a mix of sanitation, sealing, monitors, and targeted bait when a product is needed. It advises against foggers and aerosol sprays for roach control. In a small North Carolina home study, foggers left more residue on sampled surfaces without lowering roach counts; gel bait homes had lower counts. That result is not a guarantee for every bait or Salinas building. Ask how the company will judge progress in your rooms, under the product label and site plan.

Read follow-up counts by place
Keep the first trap count and the count at each later check. Note fresh droppings, egg cases, live young, and any change in cleaning or access. A lower count where a trap stayed in place is more useful than one dead roach after treatment. If captures remain high behind a sink, ask whether a leak, food, or a hidden gap is still present. If catches shift toward an exterior door, ask whether the species or entry route needs another look. In a shared building, include rooms that were locked or not inspected in the report rather than listing them as clear. Set a date for the next check before the visit ends.

What to tell the Salinas office
When you contact a provider, say whether the property is a house, rental, or food business. Share a photo if you have one, the rooms and dates of sightings, any trap catches, leaks or gaps, and who can open shared areas. Ask whether the visit is an identification and treatment assessment, what written scope will follow, and who will do repairs. If food premises are involved, mention operating hours and the records the person in charge needs. These details make the first visit useful without claiming that every Salinas roach came from the same local source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does one large roach mean my Salinas home is infested?
Not by itself. Some species live outdoors and may enter. Save a photo or specimen and ask for identification before choosing a plan.
Why do roaches return after I clean?
Cleaning removes food and water, but bugs may still use a leak, hidden gap, or nearby unit. Ask for an inspection and repeat counts at the same sites.
Should a restaurant use the same plan as a home?
No. Food areas need site-specific product use, food protection, facility records, and any corrections in the county's actual inspection report.
